Ingeborg Bachmann and Hans Werner Henze formed one of the most fascinating artistic partnerships of the postwar era. Among the highlights of their collaboration are the operas *Der Prinz von Homburg* (1958/59, based on Heinrich von Kleist) and *Der junge Lord* (1964), for which Bachmann wrote the libretti. With his sophisticated demeanor and luxurious lifestyle in Italy, Henze defied the bourgeois image of the classical composer. Shaped by his wartime experiences and the threats he faced as a gay man under the Nazi regime, he became a staunch leftist and political activist.
